October 2018

On Monday, October 1st, Mark shared the National Museum of the American Indian's Removal lesson with pre-service teachers during a social studies methods class at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City.  That presentation was followed by a discussion of the use of American Indian imagery in books, movies, and sports logos, with a class on diversity.

September 2018

No activities in September.

August 2018

On Saturday, August 11th, the annual Spirit of Nations Powwow was held once again at Patriot Academy in Jefferson City.  The role of the Eagle in Native culture was highlighted this year with the appearance of Challenger, the famous bald eagle from the American Eagle Foundation in Pigeon Forge.  Challenger is famous for flying over sports stadiums during the national anthem.  The bird of prey show was followed by a special presentation of the Cherokee Eagle Dance.  This year's powwow included lots of dancing, crafts for sale, Indian tacos, a silent auction, and children's activities, as always. However, the demonstration area was expanded with Garrett Wildcatt twining bags, Ramona Lossiah making baskets, Sharon McCoy doing beadwork, Ray McCoy doing wood carving, and Sonny Ledford with a display of Cherokee crafts.

July 2018

On Monday, July 23rd, Bill Carey with Tennessee History for Kids hosted the Tennessee History Tent Revival at the Knoxville Convention Center.  Mark and Sherry presented a program on Cherokee Culture and another on the Removal, using materials developed by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.

June 2018

On Saturday and Sunday, the Native American Festival was held once again at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area in Elizabethton, TN.  Rainy weather forced all the activities indoors, but a good-sized crowd was still in attendance to purchase crafts, enjoy the dancing, hear stories, and tour the museum.  Mark and Sherry entertained three times over the weekend with "Are You Smarter than a Park Ranger?" games in the auditorium.

March 2018

Mark led a session at the Tennessee Council for the Social Studies spring conference on the Trail of Tears materials created last summer by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.  The teachers thought the material would be useful in their classrooms.

February 2018

Mark and Sherry spent part of the evening of February 12 with some wonderful senior citizens at the Regency Retirement Center in Morristown.  The program for the evening consisted of a "show and tell" time on 18th century Cherokee culture.  For Mark and Sherry the highlight was talking afterwards with a resident from England who had served in the British intelligence service during World War II and came to America as a war bride.  Meeting her 100-year-old roommate from Chicago was a treat as well.

January 2018
